Justice Health

The Justice Health business unit is responsible for the planning and coordination of health services across police, courts, and Corrections Victoria to ensure an integrated and coordinated approach for health services in the Department of Justice. The unit was established in July 2007 to consolidate the health functions previously provided in collaboration between Corrections Victoria and the Prisoner Healthcare Unit, Department of Human Services. The establishment of Justice Health will ensure the provision of quality driven and streamlined services with a centralised governance model.

The key responsibilities of Justice Health are to:

• review and assess existing health services currently provided in Justice, in order to create and ensure a streamlined, coordinated, and integrated health service model
• facilitate an integrated approach to planning and service delivery
• review existing and potential contract providers, and responsibility for contract management
• develop and establish an electronic medical records system
• provide an innovative, creative future approach to health services that will lead future delivery of health services in Justice
• initiate and guide policy and direction for existing and future health services in Justice
• set standards with regard to monitoring and review of services
• lead health prevention and promotion activities
• provide advice and guidance to, and undertake, research projects on relevant health service issues and
• reduce organisational barriers across the public sector.

Justice Health is overseen by a committee comprising senior representatives of the Department of Justice (Victoria Police, Courts, Corrections, and Justice Health) and the Department of Human Services.
