Responsibilities of the Legal Equity policy units
The aim of the Legal and Equity policy units is to assist the Attorney-General to achieve his initiatives. To that end, the policy units develop legislative reforms in partnership with stakeholders and those who influence their outcomes. The policy units also assist with initiatives outside the Department of Justice which have a significant impact on their work program.
Legal and Equity policy units also advise the Attorney-General in relation to legislative proposals developed elsewhere in government. In particular they provide advice on:
- fairness of the proposals
- that they are non-discriminatory
- that they are balanced and that the rights of persons and the community are protected
- that they impose appropriate penalties
- that they are generally consistent with government objectives.
