Office of Correctional Services Review
The Department of Justice established the Office of Correctional Services Review (OCSR) on 13 August 2007. The OCSR independently oversees the corrections system to ensure that it is fair and accountable by meeting the needs of offenders and staff, and minimising risk to the safety and security of the community. This mandate is discharged through:
- conducting reviews of operations and services
- investigating critical incidents
- serious complaints and allegations
- monitoring and reporting on the performance of all prisons
- Community Corrections Service locations and other correctional facilities.
The OCSR is governed by the Corrections Monitoring and Review Steering Committee, which is chaired by the Secretary, Department of Justice, and has two independent members. The OCSR works closely with the Department’s Justice Health and Human Resources units and liaises closely with Victoria Police, the State Coroner’s Office and Ombudsman Victoria. The OCSR also administers a volunteer Independent Prison Visitors program.
