Office of Public Prosecutions

Serious criminal cases, such as rape or murder charges, are prosecuted by the Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP). The case is prosecuted by a lawyer - usually a barrister - acting on the instructions of the OPP. The OPP is an independent statutory agency. It's essentially a solicitor's office with one client: the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Director of Public Prosecutions

The Director of Public Prosecutions has responsibility for prosecuting on behalf of the Crown in the High Court, Supreme Court of Victoria and County Court of Victoria all indictable offences under the laws of the State of Victoria, and the conduct of any committal or summary prosecutions in the Magistrates' Court.
