John Griffin, Executive Director, Courts

Mr John Griffin, Executive Director, Courts, is responsible for providing comprehensive and integrated support services to the Victorian legal, court and dispute resolution systems. He also ensures that government policy commitments are fulfilled in relation to improving community confidence in, and access to, the legal, court and other justice system support services including the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria and Victorian Government Reporting Service.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts (Social Science)

Honorific

  • Public Service Medal (2002) for Outstanding services to Justice
  • Centenary Medal (2003) for Outstanding services to Corrections
  • Justice of the Peace (since 1971)
  • Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management (since 1998).

Work history

Before his appointment as Executive Director, Courts, Mr Griffin held the position of Director, Court Services, Department of Justice.

Between 1995 and 2001, he was the Chief Executive Officer of CORE, Department of Justice.

Prior to this he held the positions of Director of Prisons (Victoria) between 1988 and 1995, and Deputy Director, Probation and Parole (NSW) between 1985 and 1988.

Career achievements

Mr Griffin's career achievements include:

  • participating in the Fellows Program, Australian School of Government in 2005
  • attending the Leadership Consortium/Harvard University Senior Executive Forum – 'Competing of Service, Crafting Strategy, Change and Leadership' – in 1997
  • attending the National University of Singapore Executive Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1996
  • participating in the Executive Interchange Program through Monash University in 1990
  • providing technical/institutional strengthening assistance to a variety of criminal justice sector aid projects in Papua New Guinea and now Cambodia over the past decade.
