Robert J Hastings APM, Commissioner Corrections Victoria

Mr Hastings is a recipient of the Australian Police Medal, as well as the National Medal - 1st Clasp and the Victoria Police Service Medal – 35 year Clasp. He has an Associate Diploma in Police Studies, Bachelor of Arts (Multidiscipline) and a Diploma in Training and Assessment Systems.

Work History

Mr Hastings was appointed to the position of Commissioner Corrections Victoria in July 2009.

Prior to that, he had an extensive 40 year career with Victoria Police joining as a police cadet and being promoted through the ranks to the position of Assistant Commissioner.

Career Achievements

His career achievements include:

  • an extensive career in the Victoria Police, particularly active in police training and road safety.
  • Superintendent of the Victoria Police Training Development Division in the 1990s and later Divisional Manager of the same division. In 1991 he was commended for his professionalism in the introduction of, and training duties relating to, the promotion selection process in Victoria Police.
  • Project Manager for the AusAid Fiji Police Training Project, 1996 – 99, implementing new training and human resources regimes for the Fiji Police, receiving a formal commendation for his leadership and vision on this project in 1996.
  • trained with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on their Executive Development Course.
  • served as a member of the Ministerial Road Safety Council, the Road Safety Executive Group, the Monash University Accident Research Centre Board, the Victoria Bicycle Advisory Group, the VicRoads Advisory Board and has presented at overseas conferences on road safety.

Responsibilities

As Commissioner Corrections Victoria, Mr Hastings is responsible for the direction, management and operation of Victoria’s adult corrections system, which incorporates prisons and community correctional services. Corrections Victoria develops and implements policies, programs and services that ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners, and that seek to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.
