Births Deaths and Marriages
The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages was established in July 1853 and holds registers for recording the births, deaths, marriages and adoptions of people in Victoria.
Some of the registry’s key functions include:
- recording and providing certificates for births, deaths and marriages in Victoria
- providing a legal basis for people who were born or reside in Victoria to change their name
- collecting and disseminating statistical data for government and other organisations
- providing family history products and services to the general public
- performing civil marriages.

The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has proudly launched an Indigenous-themed commemorative birth certificate. The certificate is the seventh and latest addition to the registry’s range, and was launched as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the passing of the 1967 referendum.
