Emergency Services

The primary role of Victoria's emergency service agencies is to respond with trained personnel and specialised equipment to urgent requests for assistance from the public. The organisations and government agencies that provide these services include under the Department of Justice portfolio:

  • Australian Volunteer Coast Guard (AVCG) - Victorian Squadron
  • Country Fire Authority (CFA)
  • Life Saving Victoria
  • Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB)
  • Victoria State Emergency Services (VICSES)
  • Victoria Police.

Equally important is their role in raising public awareness of safe behaviour in potentially hazardous situations, and they work closely with municipal councils and other bodies to prevent these situations.

The Department of Human Services, Ambulance Service Victoria, local government bodies and other non-government agencies also assist people and communities in many aspects of emergencies, especially with recovery.

The Emergency Services Commissioner provides leadership to emergency management in Victoria, with specific responsibilities for ensuring delivery of efficient, equitable and integrated fire and emergency services.
