Fire Safety
Victoria is well prepared to respond to fire emergencies. Our specialist personnel and equipment is in a constant state of preparedness, capable of responding to both home fires and bushfires, on both private and public land.
Fire emergencies
Victoria has three fire services: Country Fire Authority (CFA), the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE).
Metropolitan Melbourne
The MFB covers fire and other emergencies in Melbourne, with the exception of some outer suburbs where the CFA provides fire services.
Regional and country Victoria
CFA has more than 1200 brigades across the state, including the outer Melbourne suburbs of Frankston, Dandenong, Cranbourne, Melton and Werribee.
State forests and national parks
Fire prevention and control in these areas is covered by the DSE.
Warnings and tips on fire safety
CFA, MFB, DSE, the SAFETYvictoria and the Victorian Government websites provide fire safety tips and emergency information.
Bushfires
The Victorian Government's recommended strategy is to 'stay and defend or leave early' on days of high fire danger. CFA's website lists and maps areas where fire bans are in operation. It has useful material to help people prepare their properties against bushfires and to help make the difficult decision on whether to stay and defend the property.
The CFA monitors and provides information on fires burning on private land, with a similar service by the DSE for fires on public land.
