Safer Streets and Homes
Continually reducing crime rates and maintaining Victoria as the Safest Place to Be presents a challenge not just for government agencies, but for everyone in our community.
Government takes on a major responsibility by providing not just law enforcement, courts and a corrections system, but also crime prevention and community safety programs, special programs for vulnerable groups, and urban planning and development guidelines that take community safety into account.
Particular groups in society are sometimes seen to be at more risk of being victims or crime, or feel that way themselves. The pages in this section have information on the perceptions and safety fears of the elderly, children, women and multicultural communities.
However, how safe and secure Victorians feel in our homes, our streets, shopping centres and towns also depends on us.
This section shows some of the ways we can increase confidence in our personal safety and build on the good work Victorians do to keep their homes, families and local areas safe and free from family or other violence and crime, and keep our communities cohesive and connected.
