Lodging an Appeal
Rights of appeal are available to applicants for most categories of firearm licences, permits and range approvals, when your licence or permit has been refused, cancelled or had conditions imposed. The main exceptions are people classed by the Act as ‘prohibited persons’.
(see "Who Cannot Hold a Firearms Licence" for more information).
If you lodge an appeal, it will not affect any future applications for a licence.
There are three steps required under the Firearms Act 1996.
Step 1:
Lodge your appeal with the Firearms Appeals Committee within 28 days of the notice of decision by Victoria Police, by completing the application form below.
Step 2:
A fee of $34.10 is payable to the Firearms Appeals Committee by cheque or money order with your application. Do not send cash with your application form. This fee is non-refundable.
The fee changes from time to time. You can contact the Secretary of the Firearms Appeals Committee at the bottom of this page to confirm the current fee.
Step 3:
Send a copy of the completed application form to the Chief Commissioner to the following address:
Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police
c/o- Licensing Services Division
Victoria Police Centre
637 Flinders Street
MELBOURNE VIC 3005
The Firearms Appeals Committee cannot send this letter for you.
