Broadmeadows Court-Annexed Mediation Pilot Evaluation
About the Pilot
In October 2007, a mediation pilot commenced at the Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court. Under this pilot, the Court refers to mediation all defended civil disputes where the amount is less than $10,000 or where the dispute is under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981, irrespective of the amount or matter in dispute.
The Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) provided the mediation service to the Court for this pilot. In August 2008, funds of $250,000 were allocated to continue the Broadmeadows Court-Annexed Mediation Pilot for the 2008-09 financial year.
Final Report
Transformation Management Services conducted an evaluation of the pilot over the period 1 November 2007 to 30 May 2008. A final evaluation report delivered in October 2008, with some key findings including:
- approximately 100 disputes were mediated during the 6 month evaluation period
- the settlement rate was 86 percent
- registrars reported that delays in the civil list decreased from 12-14 weeks to a 6 week timeframe.
