New Directions for the Magistrates' Court of Victoria 2008-2011

New Directions for the Magistrates' Court of Victoria 2008–2011 sets out a number of initiatives designed to modernise the Magistrates' Court.

The result of a partnership between the Department of Justice and the Magistrates' Court, New Directions establishes a new model for management and administration designed to strengthen the court's capacity to meet, and respond to today's needs and future challenges.

A direct response to the Attorney-General's commitment, stated in his Justice Statement 2004–2014, to modernise the justice system and specifically courts, it has been developed following comprehensive stakeholder consultation and extensive research on service delivery trends and court modernisation in other jurisdictions.

Focusing on 2008–2011, New Directions builds on the reforms already underway in the court and outlines priority initiatives under three strategic objectives:

delivering a first class service	delivering service excellence
getting the right people in the right place	building a sustainable workforce clarifying roles and responsibilities designing organisational arrangements
doing business simpler, faster and consistently	strengthening business systems and processes

Expected benefits of implementing New Directions include:

• better support for the vulnerable and victims of crime
• access to alternative ways of resolving disputes and quick access to the court when needed
• better integration of specialist services and therapeutic approaches
• more court’s services available online
• more highly skilled court staff to support the magistracy
• well trained and supported court staff with a stronger career path
• closer partnerships and linkages with the community, the Department of Justice, partners in the justice system and other agencies.
