Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal

The Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT) was set up to acknowledge and provide financial assistance to victims of violent crime committed in Victoria.

If an applicant can obtain assistance from elsewhere, such as Workcover or the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), VOCAT recommends that these avenues are explored before lodging an application with the tribunal.

The process is commenced by the applicant filing an Application for Assistance. This must be done within two years of the act of violence occurring unless the tribunal considers that, in the particular circumstances, it ought to be accepted.

If this is the case and an application is filed out of time, it should be accompanied by an Application for Extension of Time providing a detailed explanation of the delay.

It is not necessary that a person be charged or convicted in relation to the act of violence, to be eligible to apply to the tribunal.

For more information contact the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal.
