Fines
It's worth finding out about ways you can pay fines, and what happens if they are not paid on time. This section outlines fines payable through the justice system and the penalty interest rates that apply to fines. This section also includes information on:
- Sheriff's Operations
- on-the-spot fines
- payment.
If a fine is not paid, it is referred to the Infringements Court which issues an order for payment. If the order is not complied to, a warrant is issued by the court and is executed by the Sheriff's Operations.
Fairer and Firmer Fines
The Victorian Government has changed the fines system to make it fairer for everyone and firmer for those who break the law. The new laws, which came into effect on 1 July 2006, will be stricter on people who fail to pay fines. Penalties include:
- wheel clamping
- suspension of driver's licences and motor vehicle registration
- wage deductions.
There will also be safeguards for people who are disadvantaged, including the homeless, and people with an intellectual disability or a mental health condition. Anyone who has trouble paying a fine in a lump sum will be able to apply to pay in instalments.
