Changes in Wagering within the Racing Industry

A study on the changing face of wagering in the Victorian racing industry was commissioned by the Victorian Gambling Research Panel (GRP) as part of ongoing research into the dimensions of gambling and problem gambling.

Changes in Wagering within the Racing Industry is the research report that resulted from this study. It identifies the implications of the key changes which have been occurring to the operation and organisation of the Victorian wagering industry. In particular, the study observes and analyses issues relating to:

  • the emergence of new technologies, including mobile telephones, interactive television and the internet
  • the co-location of gaming facilities with wagering
  • the current and likely future impact of these changes on the racing industry.

The researchers also considered how these changing patterns of participation across different forms of wagering relate to measures for minimising:

  • the risk of increasing problem gambling behaviours
  • attracting vulnerable people to gamble when gambling would not otherwise be of interest to them.

Key areas of the report include:

  • defining gambling and wagering
  • understanding changes in wagering
  • scale and scope of the racing industry
  • trends in wagering, gambling and the racing industry
  • changes in technology, wagering and markets
  • profiles of wagering and electronic gaming machine gambling
  • future industry directions.
