Office of Racing Response to Racing Victoria Limited Integrity Issues (2008) 

A report was requested by the Minister for Racing on investigations into the betting activities of former Racing Victoria Limited (RVL) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Stephen Allanson. On 14 February 2008, Mr Allanson resigned from his position following revelations that he had provided false information to the RVL Chairman, Mr Michael Duffy and the Director of Integrity Services, Mr Des Gleeson in relation to a series of credit bets Mr Allanson had placed with a Victorian licensed bookmaker. 

Information within the report includes:

  • betting activities of Stephen Allanson
  • integrity processes of Racing Victoria Limited
  • opportunities for improvements in integrity assurance.

Report of the Inquiry into the Viability of the Victorian Thoroughbred and Standard Breeding Industries (2006)

This is a report resulting from an inquiry by the Victorian Parliament's Economic Development Committee into the state's thoroughbred breeding industry and the pressures it faces. The contents of the report include:

  • an overview of the Victorian thoroughbred breeding industry
  • strategies for setting a new direction for the industry
  • the investment environment
  • skills, training and research.

Report of the Betting Exchange Taskforce (2003)

This report examines the operation and function of betting exchanges and their likely impact on the Australian racing and wagering industries, and on State and Territory Governments. Key areas of the report cover:

  • legal position in Australia on betting exchanges
  • effects of betting exchanges
  • measures available to the Australian Government and the racing industry in response to betting exchanges.

Report of the Cross-border Betting Taskforce (2002)

A taskforce produced this report in response to concerns for the long-term viability of the Australian racing industry. Issues covered in detail include:

  • control and regulation of bookmakers
  • practice of bookmakers basing payouts on totalizator dividends
  • dissemination of bookmaker odds over the Internet and other communication channels
  • minimum bet levels on 'remote' bookmaker racing betting
  • bookmaker minimum wager obligations
  • product fee on bookmaker racing betting
  • implications of the Trade Practices Act 1974 and National Competition Policy
  • responsible wagering practices, including credit betting
  • the relative competitiveness of the Australian wagering market in a global context.

Report of the Welfare of the Retired Jockey (2001)

The Minister for Racing called for research into the welfare of retired jockeys was undertaken to find strategies for the Government and the racing industry to provide better options for jockeys when they leave behind their riding career. Information within the report includes:

  • the life of a jockey in Victoria
  • research findings on cuurent, apprentice and retired jockeys
  • retirement support services in the racing industry and other sports.
