Getting Out and How To Survive It

Getting Out and How to Survive It, first released in August 2002, is a comprehensive practical guide for prisoners who are about to be released from custody.

The latest edition of the guide was published in 2006, and the information is current as of July 2006.

Getting Out and How to Survive It focuses on the transition from prison to the community, and includes information about:

  • employment
  • housing
  • health services
  • returning to the family
  • money matters
  • dealing with agencies such as Centrelink and drug and alcohol treatment programs.

The booklet is produced by the Victorian Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (VACRO) and is supported by Corrections Victoria and the Department of Justice.

Corrections Victoria participated in the development of this booklet and consulted widely prisoners from across Victoria to ensure that information provided is as accurate and relevant as possible.

Copies of the booklet are provided to prisoners prior to their release. To download a copy of the booklet, go to the Related Publications link on the right hand side of this page or contact the Corrections Victoria Resource Centre by email, for a copy to be sent to you.
