These FAQs provide a snapshot of the Victorian prison system in 2007-08.

Q: How many prisoners are there in Victoria?
A:

There were 4,223 prisoners in the Victorian prison system on 30 June 2008. This represented an increase of 47.8 per cent on the 30 June 1998 figure of 2,858.

Q: What is the Victorian imprisonment rate?
A:

The Victorian imprisonment rate was 103.7 per 100,000 of adult population on 30 June 2008 (based on the above figure of 4,223).

Q: What percentage of prisoners return to prison after release from custody?
A:

35.6% of the prisoners who were released in 2005-06 had returned to prison under sentence within two years of release; a six year decline from 42.5% of prisoners released in 1999-2000. (Source: Report on Government Services 2009 - Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

Q: How many offenders are there in Victoria?
A:

As at 1 June 2008, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported there were 7,703 offenders on Community Corrections orders.

Q: What is the Victorian offender rate?
A:

The Victorian Community-based Corrections offender rate was 190.3 per 100,000 of adult population on 1 June 2008 (based on the Australian Bureau of Statistics report of 7,703 offenders on Community Corrections orders as at 1 June 2008). 

Q: How much does it cost to keep a prisoner in custody and an offender in the community?
A:

The Council of Australian Governments reports that recurrent expenditure per prisoner per day in 2007-08 was $221.40 and recurrent expenditure per Community Corrections offender per day in 2007-08 was $16.20.
