Hepatitis C Virus Among Inmates in Victorian Correctional Facilities

This study involved 642 prisoners from Barwon, Loddon and Port Phillip Prisons, Fulham Correctional Centre and the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. Of these, 362 prisoners had hepatitis C virus antibodies. The results of the study, and experience gained from its implementation, will help develop and update programs to reduce blood-borne virus transmission and contraction (particularly hepatitis C) among prisoners and correctional services staff.

Hepatitis C prevalence and risks report

On behalf of the Burnet Institute and the Blood Borne Viruses Consortium, Margaret Hellard, Nick Crofts and Jane Hocking prepared the report Hepatitis C Virus Among Inmates in Victorian Correctional Facilities: a report of the prevalence of hepatitis C virus and the risk behaviours associated with the transmission of hepatitis C virus in Victorian correctional facilities (September 2002).
