Joint Treatment Program at Port Phillip Prison

Marking the International Day of People with Disability the Joint Treatment Program at the Marlborough Unit, Port Phillip Prison was launched by Corrections Victoria Commissioner Kelvin Anderson on 7 December 2007.

Designed to help male prisoners with a cognitive impairment successfully reintegrate into the community, the Joint Treatment Program is a collaboration between Corrections Victoria (Department of Justice), Statewide Forensic Service (Department of Human Services) and Port Phillip Prison (GSL Pty Ltd).

The program ensures prisoners with a cognitive impairment have access to appropriate programs that will make it easier for them to break the cycle of crime.

Integral to the success of the program is the introduction of The Big Issue's Street Socceroos Program, which offers participants the opportunity to improve their physical and psychological well-being while in prison and develop a relationship with a social group that can support them post-release.

The Joint Treatment Program is a key component of 'Addressing the Barriers', Corrections Victoria's Disability Framework.
