Literature Review: Substance Use Treatment Services in Victorian Corrections
In 2003, Corrections Victoria contracted the University of South Australia's Forensic Psychology Research Group to review drug and alcohol treatment systems in Victorian prisons.
Part of this project was a literature review, which summarised approaches to best practice, prison-based, substance use treatment. The review found that:
- substance use programs for offenders are likely to have a significant impact in reducing substance use and rates of reoffending
- any coherent response to the needs of offenders with substance use problems should incorporate a variety of programs ranging from brief through to high-intensity residential programs.
The literature review findings contributed to a revised model for drug and alcohol treatment services, which was introduced in June 2004.
