Victorian Prisoner Health Study

The Victorian Health Status Study, the first health status survey of the Victorian prisoner population, was completed by Deloitte Consulting in February 2003. The report aimed to document the health status of current Victorian prisoners.

Approximately 500 prisoners were surveyed early 2002. The selection of prisoners was based on stratified random sampling.

The results offer a rich source of data for policy analysts and researchers and provide a benchmark for future planning to provide more focused, appropriate and need-based health services for prisoners.

The report details ten recommendations and is divided into four parts:

  • executive summary
  • detailed findings (including mental, physical and dental health and pathology results)
  • survey methodology, literature review and sampling methodology
  • appendices.
