Facilitation Services from the Dispute Settlement Centre Victoria
The Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) provides a service in which you can arrange for an independent facilitator to attend an organisational meeting. The facilitators who will run your consultation meeting have experience in handling complex matters.
Why have independent facilitators?
An independent facilitator can help to give the meeting structure and direction. As they do not have a stake in the outcome of the meeting and are not involved in the decision making process, they are impartial in relation to the conduct of the meeting.
What is the role of the independent facilitator?
The facilitators will endeavour to give everyone a fair chance to present their concerns and look towards future solutions. They do not give advice or make recommendations to the parties, regardless of their qualifications, knowledge or particular field of expertise.
When there are many issues for discussion at a meeting, an independent facilitator can assist the participants to make sense of problems and to look for areas of common understanding.
While the facilitator will be using the same skills that are used in mediation, the facilitators will not be running a mediation. At mediation, parties are trying to resolve the entire matter through agreement, however while a facilitator may help with opportunities to look at agreements during a meeting, it is seen as a part of a wider decision making process.
