Information Available to Registered Victims

If you are included on the Victims Register, the information you receive will be about the prisoner/offender identified in your application only.

You will be given advance notice when the Adult Parole Board is to consider the prisoner's release on parole or schedules a meeting to decide what instructions and directions it will give if the prisoner/offender is made subject to an extended supervision order.  You will be invited to make a written submission to the Board, as is your legal right.

In most cases*, you will also be advised of the prisoner's sentence length and earliest possible release date and, where applicable, of:

  • the prisoner's eligibility to be temporarily absent from custody on rehabilitation and transition permits
  • any transfer of the prisoner interstate or overseas
  • any escape from custody by the prisoner
  • the prisoner's release on parole
  • cancellation of the prisoner's parole.

*This does not apply where:

  • you are registered in connection with a criminal act of violence against a member of your family who is less that 18 years old or incapable of managing his/her own affairs due to mental impairment but you are not the primary caregiver of that family member
  • you are registered because a member of your family has died as a direct result of a criminal act of violence for which the prisoner/offender has been convicted but you are not the next-of-kin of the deceased.

Inclusion on the Victims Register does not entitle you to information about:

  • a prisoner's prison location or security classification
  • the programs that the prisoner has completed in prison
  • the location of a prisoner during their temporary absence from prison on a permit
  • where the prisoner lives or intends to live upon release from prison.

After a prisoner/offender has been discharged, you will not receive information in relation to any later sentence of imprisonment that person may serve.
