Elections and Voting

In Australia it is compulsory for all citizens over the age of 18 to enrol to vote, and vote in all relevant federal, state and local government elections. All Victorian citizens over the age of 18 years must enrol to vote in elections. These elections occur at federal, state and local government levels.

To vote in these elections, you must be correctly enrolled on the electoral roll. The electoral roll is used at election venues to confirm that you are enrolled to vote and entitled to vote in that electorate.

Voters will be made aware of an up-coming election through media such as local and national newspapers and leaflets in their letterbox. From 2008, local council elections will be held every 4 years on the last Saturday in November.

Penalties apply for not voting.
