Accessing Personal Information
Victorians can access their information held by the Department of Justice. Most of the time you can access any personal or health information kept inside the Department of Justice without the need to lodge a formal Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
There are some occasions though, when informal access to information is not appropriate, and in these cases (usually when someone else's privacy is also involved) anyone who wants access to their personal information will have to make a formal FOI request to the Department, as stated in the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
Requesting access to personal information
To request informal access to your personal information:
- contact the area of the department that holds the information and ask to speak with their Privacy Coordinator
- contact the Department’s Senior Privacy Officer by telephone, or send a letter detailing the information you seek (with proof of identity) to the Department of Justice
If you want to discuss making a Freedom of Information request, contact the FOI unit by telephone on 03 8684 0063.
