Privacy and the Department of Justice

Like most areas of Government, the Department of Justice is required to collect and use sensitive information as part of its day to day activities. And just like other Victorian government departments, the Department of Justice must follow the privacy principles outlined in the Information Privacy Act 2000 and the Health Records Act 2001 that govern how the department can handle information. In order to explain and manage these principles, the department has implemented a website privacy collection statement and a general information privacy policy.

Website Privacy Statement

The Department of Justice provides a link to its website privacy statement at the bottom of every page on this website, which explains exactly what happens to any personal information collected over the internet by the department.

General Privacy Policy

Along with its website privacy statement, the department has a general privacy information privacy policy that explains what sort of personal and health information it collects, for what purpose, and how this information is collected, stored, used and disclosed.

You can download and read:

  • the department's general Information Privacy Policy

This policy applies for all but the following areas of the department, that have developed their own privacy policy or statement:

  • the Working with Children Check Unit
  • Assets Confiscation Office
  • Consumer Affairs Victoria
  • Corrections Victoria (in relation to the handling of prisoner's personal information)
  • Criminal Justice Enhancement Program
  • Enforcement Management
  • Victims Register.
