EastLink Update

Camera testing

Recently, contractors have been testing road safety cameras on EastLink.

Testing for road safety cameras in Victoria is carried out by an independent authority, appointed after open government tender. This authority is also accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities.

Testing of the cameras happens quarterly, and is part of the regular testing required under the Road Safety (General) Regulation 1999. The cameras are tested to make sure that they measure speed accurately.

The most recent testing on EastLink took place from 21 July to 11 August 2009. All of the cameras on EastLink were tested, and the testers found no faults in any of the cameras.

For more information about camera testing, please visit Camera Testing Certificate FAQs.

Road safety camera testing on EastLink will begin again 21 October 2009.

Statistics

An average of 77.02% of highway road safety camera speeding infringements are issued to drivers for exceeding the speed limit by less than 10 km/h (please see the graph for further details).

This graph illustrates the motorway and highway infringements based on speed category for August 2009

Speed cameras form an important part of Victorian Government’s overall road safety strategy, which is supported by research by the Monash Accident Research Centre.
