Arrive alive 2008-2017

The Department of Justice, VicRoads, Victoria Police and TAC have developed arrive alive 2008-2017, the government’s 10-year road safety strategy.

It builds on Victoria’s strong safety record and introduces new actions and targets to save lives and reduce road crashes.

The strategy aims to reduce death and serious injury on the roads by 30 per cent by:

  • reducing the road toll by 100 lives per year by 2017
  • preventing more than 2000 serious injuries a year by 2017
  • reducing the severity of serious injuries.

The government will work to achieve these targets by:

  • investing $650 million into a major infrastructure program to improve roads
  • requiring that all new vehicles built after January 2011 are fitted with electronic stability control, and from 1 January 2012, are fitted with head protection technology such as side-curtain airbags
  • implementing public awareness and education campaigns to encourage consumer demand for vehicles with high safety ratings
  • introducing graduated licensing for young Victorian drivers to ensure they gain adequate supervision and experience as learners and introducing a new two-stage P1 and P2 probationary licence system before moving to a full licence
  • using intelligence-based policing to crackdown on repeat drink-driving and speeding offenders, hoon and heavy-vehicle drivers who fail to comply with safety standards and speed limits.
