Speed Zones
Speed zones in Victoria vary. In 2001, the default speed limit in built-up areas changed to 50 km/h.
The purpose of this legislation is to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes involving pedestrians. Research shows reducing the speed limits to 50 km/h help reducing fatal and serious injury crashes involving pedestrians by between 25 per cent and 40 per cent (MUARC report 261-An evaluation of the default 50 km/h speed limit in Victoria).
Speed signs are not displayed on all roads in Victoria. In these cases in built-up areas, the 50km/h speed limit is always in effect. On freeways and country roads outside built-up areas, the default speed limit is 100km/h.
