Community Concerns
The presence of a licensed premises can attract more visitors to the surrounding area, sometimes resulting in increased noise and other amenity issues. It’s important for the licence holder, staff and patrons of the licensed premises to be mindful of local residents and to minimise any adverse impact on the amenity of the neighbourhood.
The Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 and local council by-laws provide a legal framework enabling the Director of Liquor Licensing, Victoria Police and the local council to take appropriate action to resolve community concerns should things go wrong.
Licensees who ignore the reasonable concerns of neighbours could face:
- substantial fines
- a reduction in trading hours
- suspension or cancellation of their licence.
