Justices of the Peace (JPs) are volunteers who provide document witnessing and certification services to the community both during and outside business hours.
Before you arrange a time to visit a JP
- Ensure that a Victorian JP is authorised to witness your documents.
- Contact a JP at a reasonable time (between 7am and 9pm)
- Advise the JP in advance if you have a large amount of documents for witnessing or certifying (you may have to make an appointment).
- Have all your paperwork ready for the JP, ensuring that your documents are not pre-signed.
- Be mindful that JPs do not provide legal advice.
- Note that JPs are not a Notary Public.
Document signing stations
Document signing stations provide the community with convenient access to Justices of the Peace during business hours and evenings. The stations are located in public places such as police stations, libraries and other community locations. It is advisable to check operating hours in the search function on this page before attending.
Due to the popularity of these facilitates, JPs at document signing stations may not be able to assist should you have a large amount of documents for witnessing or certifying. In these instances, you are encouraged to contact an individual JP to assist you.
Justices of the Peace services offered at document signing stations include:
- attesting the execution of a document
- witnessing an affidavit for use in court
- witnessing a statutory declaration
- certifying a true copy of an original document
- certifying a person’s identity.
Fees and charges
Justices of the Peace cannot charge for their services.
Pharmacists' witnessing services
Under section 107A of the Evidence (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1958, a pharmacist is authorised to witness a statutory declaration. The Pharmacist Board of Victoria can provide further information regarding the obligations of pharmacists including possible fees and can be contacted on 03 9356 8400.
