On 26 March 2018, the LGBTIQ Justice Working Group held its second meeting.
Specific matters considered
Representatives from Corrections Victoria attended to provide an update, and discuss the implementation of the Commissioner’s Requirements on the Management of Prisoners who are Trans, Gender Diverse or Intersex (Commissioner’s Requirements). The Commissioner’s Requirements were developed in 2017, in close consultation with the Working Group, and set out high level requirements in respect of operational matters in prisons. The Commissioner’s Requirements are available on the Corrections Victoria website .
Corrections Victoria briefed members on the work being undertaken to embed the Commissioner’s Requirements in the day to day operation of prisons. Members had the opportunity to seek information from Corrections Victoria on how the Commissioner’s Requirements are being applied in practice, in the management of trans, gender diverse and intersex prisoners. Corrections Victoria intend to review the Commissioner’s Requirements in mid-2018, and will seek input from the Working Group.
A representative from Youth Justice also attended the Working Group meeting to provide an overview of the work of Youth Justice, and discuss how to embed a culture of respect for diversity in Youth Justice Centres that supports residents and staff who are members of LGBTIQ communities.
Working Group members also discussed the Australian Law Reform Commission’s Review of the Family Law System , and the call for submissions.
The Justice Working Group will reconvene for its next meeting on 21 May 2018.
