The Department of Justice includes police; courts; corrections; emergency services; regulation of gaming, racing, liquor licensing and trade measurement; and victims' services. The department also drafts legislation and administers various tribunals and programs to protect citizens' rights.
Ministerial portfolios within the Department of Justice include Police and Emergency Services, the Attorney General, Bushfire Response, Corrections, Crime Prevention, Gaming, Racing, Consumer Affairs and the establishment of an anti-corruption commission.
National Volunteer Week (13 to 19 May) is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to more than 5 million Australians who volunteer.
Local residents are encouraged to help play a part in maintaining the high standard of Victoria’s prison system by applying to volunteer in the Independent Prison Visitor Scheme.
