Taskforce’s Justice Working Group (JWG) held its fourth meeting for the year and the final meeting for the current term.

Specific matters considered

Training for judicial officers on LGBTIQA+ communities

A representative from the Judicial College of Victoria presented on the training and educational activities that it undertakes to educate judicial officers on LGBTIQA+ communities.

Community Safety at LGBTIQA+ community events and prejudice motivated crime

Representatives from Equality portfolio, Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and Victoria Police gave an update on current activities underway to ensure community safety at LGBTIQA+ events. The establishment of the prejudice-motivated crime sub portfolio at Victoria Police is implementing one of the recommendations arising from the Parliamentary Inquiry into Anti-Vilification Protections.

Inquest into trans and gender diverse suicide cluster

Members discussed the current inquest into trans and gender diverse suicide cluster and have requested an update from the Coroner’s Court on the findings and recommendations once finalised.

Next meeting

The current term of the JWG will expire at the end of 2023. The next formal meeting of the LGBTIQA+ Justice Working Group will be held in early 2024 with the commencement of the new term.
