"Marngoneet is a medium security facility. We house up to 550 prisoners. Karreenga is a protection prison with about 300 prisoners."

"Some of the qualities of a good prison officer include your communication skills. You work well with people."

"Realistically, you've got to engage with everyone out in the environment, whether it's your fellow prison officers or prisoners."

"We work with people, not weapons, because our weapon is our communication. We don't walk around with batons or firearms."

"There are going to be lots of varied tasks that you have to perform. Some of them are going to be very routine. Others are going to take you into areas of incident management, case management."

"As a case worker, I also have to deal with certain prisoners with what their goals are whilst they're here at Karreenga, as well as dynamic security."

"Dynamic security is more about interacting, being seen out in the prison environment, communicating on a daily basis."

"There are heaps of career opportunities here at Karreenga and Marngoneet."

"So, as a prison officer, you start off as a PO and then you become a senior and then supervisor. And if you want to, you could become an operations manager."

"There are other avenues that you can take if you feel like doing emergency response group. There's also opportunities in prison intelligent units."

"With emergency response group, we attend all incidents within side the prison. So, we could be doing anything from just cell searching, talking to difficult prisoners. We may have to go off on escorts to hospitals or take prisoners to other locations."

"You can also work doing other jobs in the prison where you are non-uniform or non-custodial helping prisoners with reintegration."

Daniel, Industry Officer, Marngoneet Correctional Centre:

"Here we run a bakery, so we've also got a course for them to become qualified bakers. So, once they're released, it's much easier to transition into employment and they feel like they're one step closer themselves."

"Well, I wouldn't still be a prison officer if I didn't think that what I do makes a difference about prisoners going back into the community."

"There's nothing more rewarding than when you help a prisoner through a sentence plan so that when they step out into the community, they are not overwhelmed and hopefully we don't see them back."

"Geelong is a great place to live. It's great close to beaches, fantastic waterfront."
