Members discussed and confirmed priorities for 2022/23 and updated the JWG workplan.

LGBTIQ+ Legal Service update

A representative from the Department of Justice and Community Safety advised that the 2022-23 State Budget committed $1.6 million over two years to support specialist LGBTIQ+ legal services at the Victorian Pride Centre. This investment is part of a broader whole-of-Victorian Government investment to fund implementation of Pride in our future: Victoria's LGBTIQ+ strategy 2022-32, Victoria’s first long-term plan to drive LGBTIQ+ equality and combat discrimination.

Key government reforms

A representative from the Department of Justice and Community Safety provided an update on the antivilification reform stemming from the Inquiry into anti‑vilification protections report.

A representative from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Right Commission provided an update on implementation of the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021.

A representative from the Department of Justice and Community Safety provided an update on the Cultural Review of the Adult Custodial Corrections System and engagement to date. A report will be prepared highlighting key insights and themes from the review.

Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) Special report

Deputy Commissioner Kylie Kilgour provided an update on the upcoming release of an IBAC special report on police misconduct issues and risks associated with the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).

Victoria Police Pride in our future: Victoria's LGBTIQ+ strategy 2022-32 update

Assistant Commissioner Luke Cornelius attended to provide an update of the work being undertaken by Gender Equality and Inclusion Command, Victoria Police, Assistant Commissioner Cornelius provided feedback from the recent Town Hall meeting (held in December 2021) and progress on the development of the Victoria Police LGBTIQ+ Inclusion Action Plan.
